the first presidential debate a matter of hours away. a new battleground poll released moments ago shows where the race stans in ohio, virginia and florida. acoring to the nbc news/"wall street journal"/maris poll, ohio has opened up a lead in ohio among likely voters. in virginia, the president's lead shrunk to 2 points, well within the margin of error. there's a statistical tie there. the president held a five-point lead just last month. in florida, romney closed the gap as well. he's statistically tied with the president there. last month, romney trailed the president in that state by five points. a tight race all the way around. new national polls show the race tightening with 34 days to go. head-to-head matchup here. this is nationally. president obama leading 49% to 46% among likely voters. again, within the margin of error and closer than it was two weeks ago. on the direction of the country, 40% say we're heading in the right direction. 53% say things are on the wrong track. 40% is the highest mark for this question in 3 1/2 year

our first responders have been doing a heroic job protecting our city and saving lives and they are still fighting fires and con ukt doing life-saving search and rescue migs and we owe them an enormous debt of gratitude. the storm brought something like 23 serious fires to parts of staten island, brooklyn, queens as well as city island in the bronx. the terrible fire on breezy point is now ununder control, but we believe we lost more than 80 houses. the search and recovery operations there are ongoing. if any of you saw the pictures on television is looked look a forest fire out in the midwest. the winds were just deaf statinstatin devastating and blowing from one building to the next one. we are hoping and praying that there was no loss of life in those fires, but even we can -- even if we can save any lives, many people have lost their homes and they have our full support in the days and weeks ahead. the 76 shelters we opened will remain open today and we will continue to keep shelters open until people displaced by the storm can safely return to their homes or find temporary housing. o

so i'm not sure i agree with the first statement. secondly, going back here, i think that joe biden, no question, being from pennsylvania, being from the inner city, there's no question that joe biden has that connection and touch, but also, with all due respect, having worked with ryan as a staffer in the new york state senate and also a congressman, paul ryan has that touch, but connects with the average farmer or person out there that lives in the suburbs, sort of two very different audiences there. the question becomes, and i agree with chris to a certain degree here, is whether or not paul ryan can follow up with a very good follow-up question and/or when vice president biden asks a follow-up question on the statistics, if paul can humanize those facts -- excuse me, congressman ryan can humanize those facts and statistics. that's where i think paul ryan needs to do a better job come this debate. >> robert traynham, chris kofinis, thank you very much. we'll see who's right on that one. >>> and just ahead, why todd akin is suddenl

there's a sense the crowds are appreciating what he's saying, having witnessed what he did in that first debate with president obama. he faces unique challenges in this next debate on tuesday night outside of new york city at hofstra university. specifically, he will have to speak directly to the voters in the room with them, just a total of 80 voters. while he's done a lot of town halls, the campaign says he has practice at this, he hasn't had a lot of tough questions thrown at him at those town halls. they're generally from people who are there because they support him. i spoke to a top adviser a couple days ago who said among the things they've been focusing on is physically what you do with your body during that conversation. do you look at the president? do you look at the moderator? do you speak directly to the vote who ar who is talking to y? obviously it's more challenging than the last debate. among other things, there's no closing argument. the campaign felt really good about mitt romney's closing argument and his two-minute comments throughout the course of the first debate. h
